I understand the appeal. A branded pack from Victron, Mastervolt or Super-B quickly runs to 1,500–3,000 euros for a serious installation. The same capacity on AliExpress for a fraction. Who wouldn't want to save?
The answer: anyone who ever wants to step back on board safely. Under the nice sticker "marine-grade LiFePO4 with BMS" sits an industry where almost every cost-cutting choice that could be made, has been made. Here is what I find in practice.
What separates a cheap pack from a solid one
The outside looks identical. A blue or black plastic case with terminals, neatly stickered, often imitating the look of a known brand like Victron. The difference is inside, and that is where four kinds of cost-cutting happen.
1. De cellen zelf: uitschot of B-grade 1. The cells: rejects or B-grade
Real LiFePO4 cells from manufacturers like CATL, EVE or CALB are produced within tight tolerances: capacity, internal resistance, self-discharge rate. A-grade cells are nearly identical to one another. The rest (cells that fall outside spec) is sold as B-grade, or as scrap to recyclers and grey-market distributors.
A cheap pack often contains these B-grade or scrap cells, sometimes even repackaged second-hand cells from scrapped EV batteries. The pack may deliver the advertised 100Ah on day one, but the cells are not in balance. Some still have 95% of their nominal capacity, others 70%. The BMS will force the pack to behave like its weakest cell. That advertised 100Ah becomes 70Ah within a season.
2. Het BMS: ofwel afwezig, ofwel zwaar onderverdeeld 2. The BMS: either missing or seriously underspecced
A proper Battery Management System monitors every cell individually, balances them actively, protects against over- and undercharging, prevents excessive currents, manages temperature, and communicates with the onboard charger or inverter. A solid 100A BMS from an established brand, sold as a single component, already costs more than a complete AliExpress battery.
So what is inside that cheap pack? Often a minimal PCB with undersized MOSFETs, no passive balancing let alone active, no temperature sensors inside the pack, no external communication. Under overload it disconnects too late or not at all. Under cell imbalance, the weakest cells head straight for over-discharge.
Het echte risico The real risk
A failing or absent BMS combined with unbalanced cells is not a "less optimally performing pack". It is a fire waiting for one cell to under-volt or overheat. LiFePO4 is safer than other lithium chemistries, but without BMS protection even LiFePO4 can run away thermally.
3. Bekabeling en aansluitingen 3. Wiring and connections
The terminals look solid. Until you measure. Often, under the outer plate, there is only a thin steel connection (no copper, no tin, just steel) that meets the advertised current on paper but heats up under continuous load. Vibration can loosen those joints; heat plus a loose joint is exactly the scenario you do not want.
Also: the internal cell links. In a good pack those are conductors with the right cross-section, perfectly mounted. In a cheap pack I often see screws that are barely tightened, copper links that are too thin, or even soldered connections on LiFePO4 cells, which drastically shortens cell life because the soldering heat damages the cells.
4. Certificering en documentatie 4. Certification and documentation
A serious marine battery pack meets IEC 62619, UN38.3 for transport, carries verifiable CE certification, and often also EN-IEC 60092 for marine applications. Documentation is verifiable at the manufacturer.
UN38.3-certificering ontbreekt of is vervalst. On cheap packs all these certifications are printed on the sticker but cannot be verified. CE marks are printed without underlying tests. UN38.3 certification is missing or fake. For your insurance this means damage on board caused by such a pack may not be covered.
Wat dit betekent voor jouw boot What this means for your boat
Drie scenario's die ik in de praktijk heb meegemaakt of zien gebeuren bij collega's: Three scenarios I have personally seen, or seen happen to colleagues:
Capacity halves within one season. The pack still delivers, but less and less, and runs flat without warning. Unbalanced cells, no active balancing, the weakest cell drags the rest down.
- Pakket gaat zonder waarschuwing in beveiliging. The pack drops out without warning. Mid-cruise, no advance warning, suddenly all power gone. No fridge, no navigation, no lighting, no inboard control. Not fun in the middle of the IJsselmeer.
- Brand of rookontwikkeling. Fire or smoke. Rare, but the real end-game when all the above problems converge. A lithium fire on board cannot be put out with water, and a failed battery in a closed engine room produces suffocating fumes.
Hoe een goed pakket eruit ziet What a good pack looks like
What I install on board meets a few minimum requirements:
A-grade cells from a verifiable manufacturer, typically CATL or EVE, with traceable serial numbers.
A full-featured BMS with cell balancing, temperature monitoring, communication via Bluetooth or CAN bus, and an audit trail of what has happened to the pack.
- Geverifieerde certificeringen voor scheepstoepassing. Verified certifications for marine use.
Warranty from a Dutch or European supplier you can actually contact when something goes wrong.
Cabling and terminations that handle the currents the pack can physically deliver, not just the nominal current advertised.
A solid pack costs 2 to 4 times more than an AliExpress equivalent. But it lasts 10 years where the cheap pack needs replacing within 2 seasons, and it does not catch fire at an inconvenient moment. The math almost always favours quality.
Maar het is mijn boot, mijn keuze But it's my boat, my choice
Klopt. True. I install what a client chooses, but I always tell them honestly what I find when I check an installation. And if someone comes to me with an AliExpress pack for installation, I explain up front what I cannot guarantee and which risks they take on themselves with that choice.
If price is the main argument, I usually advise sticking with a good AGM. A solid AGM from an established brand delivers fine service for 8–10 years at a reasonable price. A cheap fake lithium at that same price delivers at best 2 years of service and possibly an insurance problem. The choice is between lithium or no lithium, not between real lithium and fake lithium.
Twijfel je over jouw installatie? Unsure about your installation?
Do you have a lithium pack on board and aren't sure it is what it claims to be? A brief onboard inspection gives clarity, and if something is off, you know where you stand for the next insurance period or sailing season.
